Santiago chemists make dimestrol from methane — 20% overall, first bioactive from CH₄

On 7 November 2025, Álvarez-Constantino, Martínez-Balart, Barbeira-Arán, Velasco-Rubio and Fañanás-Mastral at CiQUS (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) reported in Science Advances an iron/collidine LED method that allylates methane, ethane, propane and isobutane. They telescoped methane into the estrogen dimestrol in 20% overall yield — the first bioactive they know of made from methane as a starting material.
